The Science Behind Ear Seeds for Digestive Issues

Constipation, nausea, vomiting and other digestive ailments have been helped by auriculotherapy

Ever suffer from constipation? One study looked at the effects of auriculotherapy via ear seeds on 53 older adults suffering from chronic constipation. These older adults were split into two nearly-even groups: control (seedless plasters that wouldn’t have an impact on the ears or the body) and intervention (ear seeds for 10 days on seven points on the ear associated with the digestive system). The intervention group had their ear seeds manually stimulated with gentle pressure three to four times a day.

The study’s researchers found that the intervention group reported a decrease in the severity of constipation symptoms, as well as an increase in quality of life, compared to the control group.

A similar study on ear seeds’ impact on constipation in patients going through hemodialysis concluded that use of the ear seeds on specific constipation-related ear points reduced the severity of constipation for these patients.

Another group of researchers reviewed several peer-reviewed articles on the effectiveness of auriculotherapy on nausea and vomiting. These researchers found that 81% of these studies showed that auriculotherapy was indeed effective in reducing the incidence and/or intensity of nausea and vomiting.

Last but not least, a 2020 study of 56 women found that the use of ear seeds for five days per week across a period of four weeks, applied to endocrine, large intestine, lung, and Shen Men points, decreased irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms of loose stools, abdominal pain, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, stress, and heart rate variability.

The Role of Ear Seeds for Digestive Issues

Ear seeds, a form of auriculotherapy, have gained increasing attention for their potential to address a wide range of health concerns. Among these benefits, one notable area of application is in managing digestive issues.

Drawing from the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and acupressure, ear seeds are believed to stimulate specific points on the ear that correspond to different parts of the body, including the digestive system. This non-invasive and holistic approach has piqued the interest of many seeking natural alternatives for alleviating digestive discomfort and promoting overall well-being.

  • Stimulation of Digestive Acupoints: Ear seeds are strategically placed on the ear to stimulate acupoints associated with digestion, such as the Shen Men point. This stimulation is thought to enhance the flow of energy (Qi) through the meridians that connect to the digestive organs, potentially improving their function.
  • Reduced Nausea: Applying ear seeds to specific points like the Inner Gate or Neiguan point may help alleviate nausea and vomiting, which are common symptoms of digestive problems and conditions like motion sickness or morning sickness.
  • Appetite Regulation: Certain auriculotherapy points, like the Mouth and Stomach points, are believed to influence appetite and cravings. Ear seed application on these points could aid in managing overeating, binge eating, or a lack of appetite.
  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Digestive issues are often exacerbated by stress and anxiety. Ear seeds can target relaxation points like the Tranquilizer point, potentially promoting a calmer state of mind and indirectly supporting improved digestion.
  • Enhanced Blood Circulation: Proper blood circulation is crucial for the optimal functioning of the digestive system. By stimulating blood flow through ear acupoints, ear seeds may contribute to improved nutrient absorption and waste elimination within the digestive organs.

While using ear seeds for digestive issues as a complementary therapy holds promise, individual responses can vary. Consulting with a qualified healthcare professional before initiating any alternative therapy is advisable to ensure personalized and safe care.
